5 Things to Look for in an Aged Care Physiotherapy Provider
Switching physiotherapy providers is disruptive, so most facilities only do it when something has gone wrong: sessions missed without explanation, documentation that fails at audit, or a rotating cast of locums the residents don’t recognise. Here are the five things to check before you sign - the same five your assessors, your board and your residents’ families will eventually check for you.
1. The same clinicians, week after week
Ask the provider a blunt question: who exactly will be in our facility, and how often do they change? Aged care physiotherapy depends on relationships. A therapist who knows your residents spots deterioration early, gets better participation in group programs, and doesn’t burn session time re-learning care plans. If the provider can’t commit to named clinicians with backfill from a stable local team, the rest of their pitch doesn’t matter.
2. Funding literacy - AN-ACC and beyond
Your provider should speak AN-ACC fluently: how therapy evidence supports reassessments, what documentation a validation visit expects, and where the Strengthened Standards are heading. Ask how they’d support an AN-ACC reclassification, and listen for a specific answer. A provider who understands the funding environment protects your revenue as well as your residents - one who doesn’t leaves money and compliance exposure on the table.
3. A reablement program, not just a visit schedule
Minimum minutes are a floor, not a program. Great providers run structured, evidence-based group therapy - falls prevention built on protocols like SUNBEAM, which cut falls by 55% in a randomised trial - alongside individual treatment with clear entry and exit criteria. Ask what their reablement model looks like, whether it can be branded for your organisation, and what outcomes they measure. If the answer is “we do one-on-ones as referred”, keep looking.
4. Documentation that stands up at review
Every session your provider delivers should leave evidence you can hand to an assessor without wincing: progress against goals, falls data, care plan input, delivered on schedule. Ask to see a sample monthly report. Then ask their current clients whether reports actually arrive on time. Late, thin documentation is the single most common complaint we hear from facilities coming to us from another provider.
5. Reach and responsiveness
A provider with real depth - multiple clinicians per region, managers who live locally, coverage across states - can absorb leave, growth and new sites without service gaps. And when something goes wrong, you want one phone number that a decision-maker answers. Test it during procurement: call them. Time how long an answer takes.
Where Optimum fits
